Restaurant City: Viva Mexico! Mexican Taquerias are here

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 11:35 AM PDT

restaurant city mexican taqueria
Restaurant City has rolled out a new Mexican Taqueria theme just in time for Cinco de Mayo. The game had been turning Japanese for the last few weeks and despite the theme's popularity, it was time for some new items. The new theme is filled with bright colors, spicy flavors, and festive sombreros. Similar to past updates, the new theme is all encompassing, and includes decorations, menu items, and music.

Full details about the new theme follow after the link. Check it out, vamos!

Free Gifts

Everyone knows the importance of being generous, and what better time to display your kind heartedness than with the new Mexican theme. Restaurant City now lets players send their friends decorative chili's and cactus juice to display in their eateries. Pictured below.

Decorations
The Mexican Taqueria theme offers a wealth of new restaurant decorations:

- Cactus Chair (1,500 Coins)
- Mexican Table (900 Coins)
- String of Chilis Decor (400 Coins or free gift)
- Maracas Wall Decor (900 Coins)
- Serape Wall Hanging (4,000 Coins)
- Cactus Juice (400 Coins or free gift)
- Mexican Spice Rack (1,600 Coins)
- Acoustic Guitar (2,600 Coins)
- Rustic Red Brick Pillar (3,000 Coins)

- Stucco Wallpaper Light (1,100 Coins)
- Stucco Wallpaper with Chili Lights (2,400 Coins)
- Pinata (12 Playfish Cash)
- Mariachi Band (90,000 Coins)
- Cactus Dispenser (8 Playfish Cash)
- Tortilla Stove (15 Playfish Cash)

Worth noting are the Pinata, Mariachi Band, Cactus Dispenser, and Tortilla Stove:

The Pinata is a functional item, meaning customers can interact with it. People will actually walk up and smash the pinata. Imagine the Mexican themed restaurant chaos! Every time someone hits the pinata, you'll earn one coin. In addition the pinata must be reset every four goes.
restaurant city mariachi band
restaurant city cactus dispenserThe Mariachi Band is an item only available to the elite Restaurant City players that are level 40 or higher. The expensive band will actually prolong customers' patience by one second, keeping them in your restaurant a little longer in case a seat opens up.

The Cactus Dispenser functions the same way any of the beverage dispensers would. Only that this drink machine is 10 percent faster than usual, making it the fastest beverage machine available in Restaurant City.

Finally, the Tortilla Stove works identically to any of the other stoves, it requires a chef to operate and can cook food for waiters to serve to customers. This stove cooks 12 percent faster than a regular restaurant city tortilla stovestove, and like the Cactus Dispenser, it's the fastest of its kind.

Menu Items
The menu has also received a Mexican flavored update with new dishes.

- Tostadas (Beans, Flower, Tomato, Chicken)
- Mexican Flan (Egg, Cream, Vanilla)
- Beef Enchilada (Chili, Cheese, Beef)

Here's a free chicken ingredient to get you started on those Tostadas: Delish!

Head over to Restaurant City to check out the rest of the new Mexican theme for yourself.

Steve Jobs explains why there's no FarmVille on the iPad

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 11:30 AM PDT

steve jobs explains why there's not FarmVille on iPadWhile the Apple iPad, along with the iPhone and iPod Touch, are great gaming devices, there are a ton of popular social and casual games, from FarmVille to Cafe World, that you can't play on any of those handhelds. Or, if you can, they're a version of the game that's not quite like the one on Facebook.

The reason is Adobe's Flash technology, which is used by Facebook and many other Web sites to run interactive games, play movies and music, or just create cool-looking interfaces. Because the Apple mobile operating system won't play Flash content, even if you used the iPad's built-in Web browser to visit FaceBook.com, you still wouldn't be able to play FarmVille (or most other FaceBook games).

Apple claims that Flash support would degrade the user experience, kill battery life, and leave devices vulnerable to security flaws.

After much sniping in the press and from fans on both sides, Apple CEO Steve Jobs has issued an extremely rare open letter, explain in his take on the controversy. He makes several good points, noting that Flash is not really a true "open" a platform, and playing Flash video can be a battery killer.

On the subject of gaming, however, he punts a bit, saying, "Another Adobe claim is that Apple devices cannot play Flash games. This is true. Fortunately, there are over 50,000 games and entertainment titles on the App Store, and many of them are free."

We suppose that's technically true, but being restricted to just the games Apple approves for sale in its App Store is just as limiting as any of the potential issues with running Flash on your Apple device.

In the end, we don't see any immediate change to the status quo. If you want to play FarmVille on your iPad, you'll just have to wait for a dedicated App Store version to be released (just as PopCap did with Plants vs. Zombies and Bejeweled).

Here's the argument against Flash on the iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch, directly from Steve Jobs himself.

Thoughts on Flash
Apple has a long relationship with Adobe. In fact, we met Adobe's founders when they were in their proverbial garage. Apple was their first big customer, adopting their Postscript language for our new Laserwriter printer. Apple invested in Adobe and owned around 20% of the company for many years. The two companies worked closely together to pioneer desktop publishing and there were many good times. Since that golden era, the companies have grown apart. Apple went through its near death experience, and Adobe was drawn to the corporate market with their Acrobat products. Today the two companies still work together to serve their joint creative customers - Mac users buy around half of Adobe's Creative Suite products - but beyond that there are few joint interests.

I wanted to jot down some of our thoughts on Adobe's Flash products so that customers and critics may better understand why we do not allow Flash on iPhones, iPods and iPads. Adobe has characterized our decision as being primarily business driven - they say we want to protect our App Store - but in reality it is based on technology issues. Adobe claims that we are a closed system, and that Flash is open, but in fact the opposite is true. Let me explain.

Zynga's Treasure Isle is the social gaming hit of the season

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 11:00 AM PDT

From 4.3 million users its first week, Zynga's treasure hunting game, Treasure Isle, has racked up 24.3 million installs for the month of April. By comparison, once popular Mafia Wars now sits at 24.06 installs and has slipped completely off the Daily and Weekly Gainers list (both now topped by Isle).

Zynga's behemoth FarmVille still tops the AppData Leaderboard for overall installs at 79.7 million registered users, though this marks a decline from 82.8 million on March 31st. In fact, Zynga's overall traffic has been in decline of late, which makes a net gain of +13 million users for April all the more remarkable. And it's all thanks to Treasure Isle.

Borrowing elements from FarmVille and early point-and-click adventure games (think LucasArts) Isle allows players to expend energy as they 'dig' through grids that make up a set of Caribbean-themed islands, leveling up and uncovering various rewards along the way. Like Mafia Wars, email access is handled through a mini-game in which a treasure chest is unlocked, rewards are reaped, and permissions are changed (in Mafia Wars players cracked a 'secure crate').

Treasure Isle's cartoony graphics (including Wii-like bobblehead avatars) mesh perfectly with soothing background music and the sounds of leisurely waves washing over your idyllic isle. It's relaxing. It looks great. And it's fun. It's almost like going on a virtual vacation.

Is Treasure Isle as addictive as Farmville? Only time will tell, but judging by early numbers it certainly seems like Zynga has the social gaming hit of the season on its hands.

Puzzle Quest 2 Mage Trainer on Facebook: Bejeweled meets Dungeons & Dragons

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 10:30 AM PDT

puzzle quest 2 mage trainer
Puzzle Quest is a popular video game series that combines jewel matching a la Bejeweled with classic role-playing game combat a la Dungeons and Dragons. The gist of this game is the following: Match 3 or more gems of the same color to activate spells, then use them on opponents to deplete their health. Once you or your enemy's health hits '0,' it's game over. As a promotion for Puzzle Quest 2, available on Nintendo DS and Xbox Live, creator D3 Publisher released an abbreviated Facebook version of the game -- Puzzle Quest 2 Mage Trainer.quest mage trainer on facebook
Even though this game is designed as a promotion, it's almost robust enough to stand on its own. It has the same kind of jewel-matching, spell-casting, weapons-tossing combat that you'll find in Puzzle Quest 2, but you only have access to one character class (there's four total in the full game). After you beat several computer-controlled enemies, your character will level up and gain access to more powerful spells and weapons. This abridged version of the game doesn't have much of a social component, outside of inviting friends to play and having their top scores appear on a leaderboard.

What we'd really like is for Puzzle Quest creator D3 turn this game into a serious social game instead of a promo to buy other versions of the game, which are due out later this Spring. We could easily see adding in currency, a virtual goods store, in-game gifting and the ability to play in real-time with other Puzzle Questers and this might have half a chance of giving all of those farm and fur (aka, farming games and pet simulation) games a run for their virtual money.

Give Puzzle Quest a try on Facebook and let us know what you think.

Happy Island: Golden Shrine and other golden decor

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 10:05 AM PDT

Happy Island Golden Shrine
Happy Island's newest attraction, the Golden Shrine, costs an extravagant 1,000,000 Coins. Its golden accoutrements are just as pricey, where one square tile of Golden Path will run you 40,000 Coins, Golden Stairs are 75,000 Coins, and Golden Columns are 100,000 Coins.

If you want to lavish gold on your island resort, then these are the items to use. As it stands, the Golden Shrine is the most expensive thing you can buy in the game that isn't a Facebook Credits exclusive. But this item also collects a lot of gold for your trouble, and all most Happy Island attractions, upgrades will increase its income, and evolve it into something bigger and more beautiful.

FarmVille, Mafia Wars new email requirement: Will you give yours up? [Poll]

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 10:00 AM PDT

mafia wars email requiredStarting today, FarmVille, Mafia Wars, Cafe World, Treasure Isle and other games from Zynga are requiring that you hand over your email in order to continue playing their games. We've heard numerous reports that players have not been able to access their games without handing over their info.

We handed over our emails a while ago, just because we wanted to stay up to date, but for those who have resisted for whatever reason, this might be the true test to seeing how much longer you will continue to play these games on Facebook.

One commenter from this post we ran earlier today says, "I have no intention of giving Zynga, FarmVille, or any other game access to my already misused email address -- it's MY email address not theirs, or anyone elses! They can kiss my support goodbye! They can further forget the pageviews I generated that they may have sold to advertisers!"

What do you think? Is requiring email to play these game over the top? Take the poll below.

SPP Ranch Fruit Trees ready for harvest

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 10:00 AM PDT

spp ranch cherry tree spp ranch orange tree spp ranch apple tree spp ranch tall coconut tree
Trees full of shiny fruit have been introduced to SPP Ranch. Orchards have been springing up everywhere as ranchers plant these new trees on their land.

Till now SPP Ranch had separated itself from other farming games, such as FarmVille, by focusing on raising and selling animals instead of crops and fruit bearing trees. In what appears to be a step towards assimilation, the previously absent fruit trees were released and SPP Ranch started to look like just another farming game clone. However, although at first we were rather unhappy SPP Ranch had squandered some of its uniqueness, we decided the fruit trees were a nice touch and add a little more depth to the game. Our final verdict: orchards are definitely welcome on our ranch.
Eight fruit trees were introduced and every one of them can be harvested. Below you'll see the name of the tree, its price, and the money made through harvesting.

- Short Coconut Tree (375 Coins) 4 Coins in 12 Hours
- Apple Tree (420 Coins) 13 Coins in 48 Hours
- Tall Coconut Tree (540 Coins) 9 Coins in 24 Hours
- Orange Tree (480 Coins) 22 Coins in 72 Hours
- Cherry Tree (720 Coins) 43 Coins in 96 Hours
- Rambutan Tree (35 Gold) 92 Coins in 48 Hours
- Starfruit Tree (45 Gold) 140 Coins in 72 Hours

spp ranch rambutan tree spp ranch short coconut tree spp ranch star fruit tree
Although the trees may seem rather expensive compared to the minimalistic payoff, its important to remember that the fruit trees are never sold, simply harvested. They will remain exactly where you left them, continually producing fruit. Eventually, after harvesting the trees enough times, they'll start making a profit.

SPP Ranch wants every rancher to have an orchard, so they've given everyone a free Apple Tree to start. The tree can be found in your gift box; head to SPP Ranch to check it out today.

Happy Island Undersea Explorer resurfaces

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 08:00 AM PDT

happy island undersea exploerer
Back by popular demand, the lucrative Undersea Explorer has returned to Happy Island. Previously available as a limited time purchase, the offer is back for those who originally missed out.

happy island undersea explorerUnlike the boat, plane, and helicopter, this modern transport doesn't bring guests to your happy island. Instead, the Undersea Explorer dives underwater and returns with 10,000 Coins a day. Moreover, it never stops, delivering ten grand a day forever.

The picture above asks , "Who knows what else it will find?" This is because the Undersea Explorer won't just return from its underwater missions with heaps of coins; sometimes the craft will return with rare items for your island resort.

Of course, such an incredible deal must have a catch, and in this case it's the price. The Undersea Explorer costs a whopping 199 Facebook Credits (about $20), making it one of the most expensive items we've ever seen.

If you're interested in getting one of your own, simply log into Happy Island and an explorer icon (pictured at right) will be at the top right of the game's screen. The first time the Undersea Explorer hit stores it was for a limited time only, and the same goes for the current deal. As seen above, only about 12,000 remain. This may sound like a lot, but with over ten million monthly Happy Island users all playing, they will naturally sell pretty quickly.

So head over to Happy Island to check it out. Before shelling out all that cash, make sure you're settled on your decision.

Guide to the Happy Aquarium Toolbar: Install and get 10 Free Pearls!

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 07:15 AM PDT

Happy Aquarium Toolbar Game Bar Download on Crowdstar
Instead of reloading your game, clicking on the Happy Aquarium "Want to get 10 free pearls?" icon should now deliver you to the gamebar (i.e. toolbar) download page on Crowdstar's site. Click on "Download Gamebar" for a 2.4MB file with the name: FFCrowdstarToolbarInstaller_CDS_tbr_1.8.1.0.exe

But simply downloading the bar isn't going to get you the 10 Pearls. After installation (which should take less than 5 seconds), you're going to have to restart your browser.

Happy Aquarium Toolbar or Gamebar is now installed
Once installed, your toolbar will have the following features: a Web Search box, a Fish Feeding Meter, a Level and XP indicator, little icon shortcuts to other Crowdstar games, like Happy Island and Happy Pets, plus a little red comics bubble icon that leads to a dropdown mini-feed menu of Happy Aquarium news from its Facebook fanpage.

Now it's time to turn on Happy Aquarium. You can do that just by clicking on your shiny new toolbar, which should earn you some coins.
Using the Happy Aquarium Gamebar earns you coins
Only after all of this, will your 10 free Pearls be delivered.

If you hate the toolbar, uninstalling it is a cinch in Firefox. Just go to the top of your browser, click on Tools, Add-Ons, click the Uninstall button for the "Crowdstar Gamebar", and finally, restart your browser.

And the best part of this is, you get to keep the Pearls!

Wild Ones sale drops accessory prices

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 06:51 AM PDT

wild ones rubber grenade wild one goo globgun wild ones mustache wild ones camo jacket
On Tuesday, Wild Ones announced an accessory sale and slashed prices of various goodies in the store. In addition to the price drops, new items were added to the existing catalog.

While we browsed, a few of the most intriguing deals that caught our attention are pictured above. In proper hands, the extremely bouncy Rubber Grenade is a powerful tool. Likewise, the Goo Globgun can lay down some serious hurt on immobile pets. Both are available for relatively small amount of Coins.

On the accessories front, the valuable 3,000 Coin Camo Jacket offers pets the safety of 5% less damage every hit. Finally, the ever important mustache is available for just 19 Coins and is a must have for any self respected male (or female) fighting pet warrior.

So as the Wild Ones Facebook fan page says, "Check out the accessory section of the store to trick out your pet with some bargain threads!"

Wild Ones multiplayer unleashes unlimited kills

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 06:30 AM PDT

wild ones respawnTraditionally, Wild Ones was a game of survival. Players were given one life, and the winner was the last man standing, regardless of the amount of kills they had accumulated. Players would abuse this by teaming up and hiding in corners, waiting to emerge and finish off the weak players who had been battling it out. The winner was often not the most heroic warrior, but the sneakiest manipulator.

As a result, Wild Ones has made a number of changes to the core multiplayer gameplay. Most significantly, the match winner is no longer determined through the method mentioned above. Now, the winner is the courageous pet who has the highest score by the end of the match. A pet's score is the est number of kills minus the amount of times they died. For example, if in the time limit I got three kills and died once, my score would be two.

This change also means that once a pet dies, they respawn at a different location on the map with full health, and continue playing. Therefore, there is no limit to the possible amount of kills during a game. The default time limit for games is five minutes but that can be extended for even more exciting deathmatches.
WIld ones unlimited kills respawn
wild ones respawnWith the new way of scoring and the addition of respawns, players are encouraged to play more intelligently. Players are rewarded for being more aggressive but still penalized for dying, making every decision a crucial one. The deathmatch-style gameplay also uproots the common tendency for pets to unfairly team up once in the game.

Although we like the new changes, the element of survival present in the old settings did appeal to us. Despite the various exploitations, it made for some seriously exciting matches. The addition of respawns diminishes the value of your pets life, perhaps making the game less compelling.

Nonetheless, as dedicated Wild Ones fans, we're willing to give this new unlimited kill-filled gameplay a shot. As seen above, clearly our skills carried over and you can expect the valiant Pookie Manilla to be fighting it out with the revamped settings for a long time to come.

Head over to Wild Ones to check it out yourself.

Let us know which version of the game you prefer in the comments.

FishVille developer builds game to propose to girlfriend

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 06:00 AM PDT

We've all heard some of the weirder stories, like a Japanese man marrying a Nintendo DS game character, and a virtual marriage and affair on Second Life ending in divorce, but in the intersection of video games and marriage, there are paths that lead to happy endings.

Anders Howard, a game designer for Zynga, in an effort to provide his girlfriend Steffany with the most awesome and memorable marriage proposal ever (check out the pop-up window of the engagement ring!), got his co-workers together to create a video game marriage proposal. He named it -- Dinner Love and the Quest for Soup!

Already the news has made the rounds on Kotaku and the official FishVille Facebook fanpage.

On top of that, the game is available on Anders' website for anyone to play here.

Happy Aquarium's own SpongeBob SquarePants

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 05:00 AM PDT

Happy Aquarium's Scrub Rob
His name's Scrub Rob, and you can find him under the yellow star tab in the Special section of the Happy Aquarium store. Clearly a knock-off of SpongeBob SquarePants, a fan of the show might grab him for the novelty alone, if they're willing to pay up the 58 Facebook Credits (equivalent to $5.80 USD) or 70 Pearls for the honor.

For non-fans such as myself, it would've been nice it they added some functionality to the character. I mean, he looks like a giant scouring pad, which means he looks like the perfect thing to wipe off algae from a tank. But alas, he's just there to look spongey and rock those shades.

Either way, Happy Aquarium expects him to be popular, so he'll only be around until April 29th, 2:00 p.m. PST.
