Oui, Mafia Wars Paris is 'Coming soon'

Posted: 20 Apr 2010 12:00 PM PDT

mafia wars next stop -- paris!

Mafia Wars next stop will be the City of Light, better known as Paris, France. Take a look at the drop down bar in Mafia Wars, the first option says "Paris: Coming soon." We're not sure what to expect, but if Mafia Wars Paris doesn't have a bread, wine and cheese collection, we'll be very disappointed.

We're not sure if 'Coming soon' means that Mafia Wars Paris will roll out before Mafia Wars Las Vegas, but we've contacted Zynga to find out more details.

Mafia Wars Paris -- what kind of special items do you want to see in this new city?

FarmVille Fan Cow
The new Fan Cow costs 12FV$ and also allows you to give one away to a neighbor!
FarmVille Fan CowSeveral weeks ago a Secret Cow and Secret Sheep arrived in the FarmVille Market, users were asked to 'vote' for whichever animal they would like to see in the FarmVille Market. After many of us joined the fan pages for one or both of the animals, we know they would be coming soon. The cost of the animal would depend on how many users became fans:

2 Million fans: New animal for 12 Farm Cash
3 Million fans: New animal for 50,000 Coin
6 Million fans: New animal for 10,000 Coin
11 Million fans: New animal for 5,000 Coin and every fan gets one free!

Announcement on Official FarmVille Forums from Lexilicious:

The Cows were victorious in the Battle of the Barnyard! As promised, a new Cow is now available in the Market for users who are Fans of the FarmVille Cows Fan Page.

* The Fan Cow can be purchased for 12 Farm Cash from the Market.

* The more fans the Cows get, the cheaper the cow will become! If the Cows manage to get 3 million fans, the cow will be released for coins!

* Please note: It may take up to 24 hours after you become a fan for the cow to be unlocked in the market.

* If you wish to become a fan of the FarmVille cows to gain access to the new bovine, click here!

The Fan Cow Facebook Fan Page curently has 2,486,304 fans, are you happy with this outcome, 12FV$ and one to give to a neighbor?

Heyzap connects social games with embeddable "bar"

Posted: 20 Apr 2010 11:30 AM PDT

That little linkbar atop Zynga's Facebook games -- the one that contains links to all of Zynga's other Facebook games -- is one of the keys to the company's viral cross-marketing success. For other companies, social gaming network Heyzap is now offering its own embeddable Social Bar that can mimic some of Zynga's cross-marketing potential.

The bar, which can be added easily by a game's developer, sits on the bottom of the browser window as the player navigates a social gaming site, pointing those players to any of 30,000 games on the Heyzap network. Publishers can use the bar to link players to their own games, or to games by competing publishers. Why would you want to link to competing publishers? Well, because the linker earns a portion of any virtual goods sales made by the person following the link. Cha-ching!

FarmVille Terrier puppy now available for a mere 5,000 coins

Posted: 20 Apr 2010 11:00 AM PDT

farmville terrier puppy available in the market

During an update today, FarmVille released another adorable puppy that you can buy using coins -- a mere 5,000 coins to be exact (provided you have 15 neighbors or more).

The new breed is a terrier, and it's too cute for words. Like the other puppy purchasable with coins, you must feed the terrier every day for the next 14 days or it will run away. Food can be purchased or received as a gift (see our FarmVille Puppy kibble guide for more details).

"Wait a minute," you're thinking, "why are there are two Terriers in the market?" A second Terrier, which can be purchased for 65 FarmVille cash will never run away and will -- we suspect based on the image below -- soon come in several different colors.

Yes, we bought one of these Terriers right away and named it 'Tere Bear.' OK, sure, maybe it's not the most inventive name, but we were under pressure to get this up right away.

After purchasing Tere Bear, we were given the requisite 'feed your dog or else' warning. Then, we took Tere Bear home. See our new cute-as-a-bug pup on the farm next to her brother Captain Fluffy.

South African cell provider launches GPS game, Legends of Echo

Posted: 20 Apr 2010 11:00 AM PDT

If you still somehow think that location-based mobile gaming is just a fad, you'll now have to argue the point with Southern Africa's leading cellular network provider. Legends of Echo, just released by Vodacom and developer AfriGIS, uses the real-world map of South Africa as the playing field for fantastical sword and sorcery battles with other players trying to occupy the same locations.

Even though the game itself is technically free, Vodacom has plenty of ways to make money off its players. Besides charging for the usual data/GPS plans that a game like this requires, Vodacom also charges players for in-game "Elements" that can be purchased in exchange for pre-paid airtime. Check out a trailer after the break.

Quote of the Moment: Mid-Farm Crisis

Posted: 20 Apr 2010 10:30 AM PDT

"I named my online puppy "Giant" and am almost a second star level master at growing pattypan squash. I have a super-coop for my 60 chickens and 34 are golden. Slowly trading out the others for gold ones as friends find golden eggs (major daily coinage). Oh, and did you see my duck flying the kite? So cute!

Shooooot! ... there I go again.

See, this is why you are the bane of my existence. 42-year-old men ... should not be playing Farmville!!

Sure it is consequence free escapism. No tornadoes or pestilence. No house fires or frat parties next door that involve some sort of rearranging lawn furniture at 4 am. The fish don't die in the Koi Pond and my favorite duck will always have a steady wind and never get his kite stuck in the gorgeous banyon or acai trees. I am not genetically predisposed to farming or decorating and yet Farmville allows me to think I am doing both. It is very relaxing for 30 minutes to an hour a day bringing form and function to your silly little online world.

But 42-year-old men should be buying Harley's and stocks and stuff. Not excited that their online puppy named Giant will be fully grown in 7 more days. Seriously, am I really 'cool'er in life because I figured out how to create the optical illusion of elevated land and hay bale piles?"

-Blogger Randy Thomas wishes his mid-life crisis was a little more steroetypical.

Free virtual money giveaway at Island Life and My Vineyard

Posted: 20 Apr 2010 10:05 AM PDT

Metaplace -- makers of Island Life and My Vineyard -- is offering free premium virtual currency in their games today for everyone who signs in and plays.

Right now, you can get 3 Bux from Island Life and 3 Wine Cash from My Vineyard. This will put your premium currency total to 8 in each game, since you already start with 5.

Both games are, in a sense, farming sims with the usual shebang of planting, harvesting, and selling crops for money, then using that money to decorate and plant some more. While the mechanics are tried-and-true, My Vineyard is probably the first Facebook vineyard game. They also both sport a very distinctive, semi-realistic look that YoVille players would be familiar with -- where rocks and trees look like real rocks and trees, instead of cartoon-like shapes and bright colors. It's not an easy aesthetic to get used to, especially when it's layered on an isometric grid, but it's certainly different.

Treasure Isle Cheats & Tips: Gem gifting guide + quick links

Posted: 20 Apr 2010 10:00 AM PDT

If you've been busy digging in the dirt for rare items in Treasure Isle on Facebook, you've undoubtedly run across those annoying statues that need to be unlocked with colored gems (there are five colored gems in all: red, green, blue, orange and purple).

Now, if you play by the rules, the only way you can get gems if by visiting friends islands or by receiving them as gifts. But, if you have a friend in need of a certain color gem, that's where things get a little more difficult, because you only have the option to gift two gems at a time.

And that, treasure hunters, is where this thing you're reading comes in handy. Below are links to all of the colored gems available in the game. All you have to do to send any of these gems is click on its image below and then start gifting like you're some kind of social gaming Santa Claus.

Playfish COO de Halleux talks 'billions' and 'brands' at Inside Social Apps

Posted: 20 Apr 2010 10:00 AM PDT

"Billions" being how much money, in dollars, a wildly successful social game could make in just a year. All it would take, according to Playfish COO Sebastien de Halleux, is a game that attracts 100 million monthly users generating an average of 80 cents a month in the game world. For context, the most popular game currently on Facebook, Farmville, has about 81.4 million monthly users earning, on average, an estimated 19 cents a month for Zynga.

"Brands" being the things that are likely to be more and more important in driving growth of social and mobile games. While de Halleux notes that early mobile game successes like Koi Pond managed to attract an audience without an established brand name, in early 2010 seven of the top 10 iPhone games were based on pre-existing brands like The Sims. De Halleux predicts that social gaming will follow this trend, and that almost all Facebook games will be recognizable brands within the next 24 months.

Happy Pets: Get Free Facebook Credits from Deal of the Day

Posted: 20 Apr 2010 06:00 AM PDT

Happy Pets Deal of the DayCrowdstar, the maker of Happy Pets, recently partnered with TrialPay to offer free Facebook credits to players via completing various online deals and surveys. Predictably, this hasn't worked out very well. But the new "Deal of the Day" feature in Happy Pets has turned out to be a reasonable and pleasant alternative.

As reported by Frisky Mongoose today, watching a "Letters to Juliet" film trailer for the required minimum of 15 seconds was enough to earn them 1 FB Credit! That's akin to being paid one US dollar!

Now, before you run to your game excitedly, only to get annoyed when you can't find your DotD -- and there will be a lot of you who won't have it -- here's the official word from Crowdstar as to why: "Deal of the Day only appears for select users in some regions. You may be in the Target market for some deals and not for others. The icon may not appear for you every day."

PetVille: Earth Day items for your home and office

Posted: 20 Apr 2010 05:30 AM PDT

Having already gone full-out with their new Rainforest theme (which has taken over the Outdoors store), PetVille enacted a modest release for Earth Day featuring 3 posters and 2 sets of recycling bins. You'll find these in the Furniture store on Floors 1 (Living Room), 2 (Dining Room), and 4 (Home Office). Floors 1 & 2 contain the same items.
PetVille Earth Day Living Room
The 3 posters -- 1) Recycle, 2) Keep It Green, and 3) Live Green Love Green -- are 10 Pet Cash each, and pretty underwhelming in design. The recycling bins in the Living Room and the Dining Room are called Chrome Bins and go for 3,500 Coins each.
PetVille Home Office Earth Day
On the 4th Floor, in the Home Office, we've got 4 regular, plastic-looking recycling bins in bold primary colors. Unlike the Chrome Bins, these have symbols to visually designate them for Bottle, Paper, Can, and Compost recycling. These go for 2,000 Coins each, and definitely look more fun than the Chromes.

New Pet Society fish: Danio Tinwini

Posted: 20 Apr 2010 04:30 AM PDT

Pet Society Danio Tinwini
There's a new fish in the Pet Society pond, the Danio Tinwini, and it can be caught without special gear or cash bait. Modo says her little geisha used a piece of cheese. Others report using an apple (either home-grown or from the market) and a homegrown coconut.
Real Danio: Image from forums.loaches.com
The Danio Tinwini is based on a real fish, commonly called the Gold-Ring Danio. It's a small species that was found in Myanmar in 2009. Isn't it amazing that there are still some things left to be discovered in our world?

Mafia Wars: Animals are your mob family's new secret weapon

Posted: 20 Apr 2010 01:00 AM PDT

When you think of animals in most Facebook games, it conjures up images of cuddly, big-eyed creatures that you have to feed every few hours. Mafia Wars will soon erase that image from your mind, by introducing a series of teeth-baring animals that will soon become an invaluable part of your mob family's arsenal.

Starting next week, animals will become a full-fledged part of your weapons cache, so while fighting and robbing, each mobster will be armed with one weapon, armor, vehicle and animal.
mafia wars vicious crates
You'll be able to find this new form of weapon several ways. This week, Mafia Wars is hosting an 'Animals Gone Wild' week, and animals can be looted from jobs, fighting and robbing. Vicious Crates, which cost reward points, are now available in the Marketplace, and those contain an assortment of animals "that can't be found anywhere else." Animals will be featured as sales items in the Marketplace as well, in addition to a limited edition African Lion and Pit Bull (this week only). And, if you already have collected a menagerie of furry friends, they will also go weaponized starting next week. This new development brings a whole new meaning to the phrase, "Kitty has claws." ROAR!

Treasure Madness celebrates Earth Day with new maps

Posted: 20 Apr 2010 01:00 AM PDT

Treasure Madness is better known as the game that Zynga modeled their latest smash hit Treasure Isle after. It has been released for quite some time, and combines treasure hunting with fun simple minigames. Unlike Treasure Isle which unlocks new maps for free as you level up, Treasure Madness requires that you purchase many of the maps.

For Earth Day, Treasure Madness has released four new limited time maps. These maps are the following:

Sun Island - Free, low treasure density, high gold density
Tree Island - 1300 GP, low treasure density, average gold density
Trashcan Island - 10 Mu$, very low treasure density, average gold density
Panda Island - 2200 GP, average treasure density, average gold density

There is also a new Earth Day collection available. All of these items are only available for the next 6 days, so you had better act soon if you would like to complete these maps while they're still around!

Have you completed your Treasure Madness Earth Day collection yet?

Happy Island releases small set of new decor

Posted: 20 Apr 2010 12:30 AM PDT

While most games tend to release items in sets with a general central theme, Happy Island has just released a mish-mash of random decorations. We're not going to complain though, new goodies are great no matter the theme! The new items released are:

Rope Cordon - 400 coins
Pink Flower - 2 Facebook Credits
Light Blue Flowers - 1675 coins
Bamboo Fence - 1800 coins
Bush Lion - 2200 coins

The Light Blue Flowers are the item that will stand out the most, but we're sure that some creative designs will be made with the Rope Cordon and the Bamboo Fence. This is a small release, but it is great that only one of them requires Facebook Credits and the coin items are not too expensive.

Log in to Happy Island to purchase these new items!
