Happy Birthday FarmVille! One year later, the farm game still rules Facebook

Posted: 18 Jun 2010 11:00 AM PDT

Filed under:

Hard to believe that it was only a year ago that FarmVille ignited our passion for farming, albeit virtually. Since then, we've harvested thousands of crops, trees, animals and have sent about just as many gifts to our friends. We've also graduated from simple farming to asking friends for holiday gifts, Valentines and eggs for limited edition seasonal mini-games. We've upgraded from a regular tractor to a more efficient (but gas-hogging) Hot Rod tractor complete with flames on the sides. We've moved from farming solo, to farming with friends in Co-Op mode, with the Farmer's Market and now with Crafting Cottages. And, we finally discovered there was life beyond level 70 and buying that $1 million villa.

Of course, this year has been filled with its share of problems: Friends complained about us spamming them on Facebook, there was that whole ScamVille incident, the game has had some ongoing stability problems, and oh yeah, some people got so addicted to the game that they neglected their families.

But for many of us, these negatives can't overshadow the hours of enjoyment we've gotten out of this Facebook game that you can play for the low price of free. Even though the popularity of the game seems to be waning, 65 million some-odd people can't be wrong.

Happy First Birthday, FarmVille -- here's to many more.

FarmVille cakes: An homage to virtual farming with frosting and flour

Posted: 18 Jun 2010 09:00 AM PDT

farmville turns one year old this week

Slap on a paper hat and blow on your vuvuzela -- FarmVille, the virtual farming phenomenon on Facebook turns one year old this week. Hard to believe that the game has only been around for 12 months, and in that time has managed to attract at least 65 million players, many of them daily players. That devotion has spilled over into baking, and over the past 365 days we've spotted a slew of heavily frosted (and delicious looking) cakes that pay homage to the virtual farming game.

Some are clearly the work of professionals and others are homemade, but they all convey one thing -- people love FarmVille so much that they actually want to eat it. But seriously, you'll be hard pressed to find many other games with such widespread devotion in cake form.

FrontierVille Cheats and Tips: Energy Guide

frontierville cheats and tips energy guide
Energy is FrontierVille's most valuable and scarce resource. Fortunately we have the FrontierVille energy cheats, tips, and news to have you constantly refreshed and ready to work the land of the wild west. Energy in FrontierVille functions much like it does in Treasure Isle, that is, you need it for everything. Luckily there are many ways to regain energy to prolong your gameplay.frontierville cheats and tips energy guide

Continue reading to see all our FrontierVille cheats and tips for the energy system.

There are a number of ways to regain energy:frontierville cheats and tips energy guide

Waiting - One unit of energy is regained every five minutes (originally three, but it the time was extended). Therefore, the most viable way to regain a full meter is by simply taking a break from the game. Luckily, in the early levels, an hour or two will be more than enough to revitalize your settler.
frontierville cheats and tips energy guide
Food - Food is gained by harvesting animals and crops, and can be used to buy meals at the FrontierVille marketplace. Meals will partially refill your energy meter, allowing you to continue working. Some of the various meals are:
frontierville meals
  • Light Snack: Costs 25 Food and refills 3 energy Points
  • Breakfast: Costs 50 Food and refills 7 energy Points
  • Lunch: Costs 100 Food and refills 15 energy Point
  • All You Can Eat: Costs 10 Horseshoes and refills entire energy meter.
  • Beef Jerky: Costs 30 Horseshoes and refills entire energy meter. Also permanently adds three points to your energy meter

Visit Friends - Just for visiting friends you'll receive energy points among other items. So make sure you visit all your neighbors everyday.
frontierville energy
frontierville cheats and tips energy guideFree Gifts - You can send your friends meals for free from the Free Gifts page. Either send or ask your friends for meals and accept the requests when they arrive to regain energy points. The free gift meals have the same energy value as they do at the marketplace so don't ignore this valuable resource.

Working - Very often, working the land will yield extra energy. Whether it's chopping wood, clobbering a snake or whacking your house, a blue lighting bolt will sometimes pop out. This bolt represents one point of energy. Although that's not much, we're looking to get our hands on all the energy we can.

Collections - Completing collections will yield a specified reward which can include energy boosts and upgrades.

Leveling up - A level up will fully refill your energy bar and add one to your maximum energy possible.

FrontierVille Energy Cheats and Tips
Unfortunately, there are no real secret FrontierVille energy cheats allowing people to gain an unfair advantage. Otherwise, the people who pay good money for their goods would feel exploited. However, there are a number of ways to get ahead of the competition. Our FrontierVille Energy Cheats and Tips segment has discovered a few:

Visit neighbors - Although all the posts saying "add me" may be overwhelming at times, these people know the real key to success: neighbors. Having an overwhelming amount of neighbors is the easiest way to abuse the energy system (and the other systems) in FrontierVille. Visiting neighbors refills energy and grants you other treats and are a great option once you've expending all your points.

Visiting neighbors also allows you to do five tasks. If you help your neighbor by harvesting trees or animals, you can get extra food to buy meals with.
frontierville cheats and tips energy guide
Use neighbors to work - As mentioned above, doing work can yield food and energy, both of which may contribute to your energy meter. Make sure you fully utilize neighbors visiting your farm to give you extra food and energy after your meter has ran out. In addition, you may hire two neighbors a day for 50 Coins apiece. These can also net you some food and energy.

Use neighbors for free meals - Although we never like to abuse our friends' generosity, sometimes we just need that energy! And if your friends play FrontierVille they will be sure to understand. Send those free gifts and request gifts in return. Free meals are a great and easy way to get extra energy.

Be smart - Our final advice for adventurers out braving the frontier, is to be smart about using energy. What we mean by this is simple, don't do anything that would cause a waste of energy points. For example, knowing that you are just two experience points away from an energy refilling level up, don't eat Beef Jerky or visit a neighbor. Simply do a task or two on your own farm so that those two more significant energy sources aren't expended.

We leave the rest up to you. We've done our best to advise you in the ways of FrontierVille energy consumption. FrontierVille Energy Cheats and Tips was just the first in our series of FrontierVille guides. Be sure to check back in and get more tips for our favorite western Facebook game.

Wild Ones new map Kennel moves battle to a construction yard

Posted: 18 Jun 2010 07:30 AM PDT

Filed under:

wild ones kennel new map
Kennel is the newest map in Wild Ones. Players will be relieved to hear that this map does not require the new membership subscription. The $5 monthly membership program has lots of exclusive items, deals and pets not available to ordinary players. Fortunately, all players have access to this new map, regardless of level or membership status.

Kennel is a construction yard themed map. The main structural feature is the scaffolding in the center of the map. This tower divides the map into two halves, preventing pets from easily hitting those cross map shots with ease. However, as we witnessed earlier, the digging armadillo and flying bat easily traversed the new map and were able to make insane plays almost without regard for the terrain. The central tower is made of thin barriers and can be destroyed fairly easily, changing the dynamic of the level. Also notable are the perches along the top of the level. The flood lights serve the sniping sort very nicely, and remove the player from the main action. However, don't take our word for it; be sure to head over to Wild Ones and play the new map, Kennel, yourself.

Wild Ones' new pet Hamster is members only

Posted: 18 Jun 2010 07:00 AM PDT

Filed under:

wild ones new pet hamsterWild Ones has released another new pet: the hamster. This hamster follows the release of the bat, two pets which require the $5 monthly membership subscription.

The membership program became active not long ago and offers players access to exclusive weapons, items, deals and pets. Unfortuantely, only Wild Ones members are able to play as the fearsome rodent.

This hamster is not a creature you want to mess with, in fact, when powered up it poses maximum danger. The hamster's special move makes it grow twice it's usual size and allows the player to suffer only half the damage it usually would take, for an entire minute (pictured at right, hamster dwarfing panda). That's a very valuable minute of damage squandering, especially against the beefier weapons.

With the new digging armadillo and flying bat, the hamster arrives with another very unique element on the battlefield. Special abilities are becoming more and more important as new animals are released. Head to Wild Ones to check it all out.

FrontierVille: New Chicken Coop and Varmint Hunting quests

Posted: 18 Jun 2010 04:07 AM PDT

Filed under:

frontierville chicken coopFrontierVille has received new quests. First, the Chicken Coop will allow you to harvest all your chickens at once.

To get started, purchase the Chicken Coop from the FrontierVille market. To buy the building, you must have 13 neighbors and 30 wood. Once placed on your land claim, the Chicken Coop will require 18 whacks, each costing 16 wood. Like the Cabin, to finish the Chicken Coop you'll need to get hand drills, nails, paint, hammers and bricks from your friends or by spending Horseshoes.

Also new are varmint hunting quests. The FrontierVille Facebook fanpage advises players to "be on the lookout for quests to clobber snakes and scare bears, and show off your prowess at gettin' rid of varmints!"

Sounds good to us, ain't nothing like giving a pesky snake a nice clobbering.

Head over to FrontierVille to get started.

Pet Society: Dig out a Kitty

Posted: 18 Jun 2010 03:00 AM PDT

Filed under:

pet society happy kitty plushie weekly digging special
There's a new item buried in the Town Forest in Pet Society-the Happy Kitty Plushie. Can you dig it out? Sushi's Mama tried to find the kitty, even going against her usual penny-pinching nature and buying an extra 5 shovels for 300 coins. But no luck today!

Despite the fact that we didn't find the kitty, we still like the Treasure Hunt feature. Our favorite part of it is actually the beginning. We like the map and how you can zoom into the forest. Who knew that the pets were living on an island?!
pet society lost
This might explain some of the stranger things that go on in this game. Like how Mama sometimes sees a large sleeping bear when she digs.
.pet society bear
The bear appears randomly, in a different spot of the forest. And sometimes, it's not there at all. We think Mama can get so close to the bear because they're so alike!

Offerpal: In-game offers triples advertising revenue

Posted: 18 Jun 2010 02:30 AM PDT

Those ubiquitous, infamous offer walls that run below many social games are a great way for publishers to attract more revenue from their players. But they only work if users see them, and statistics show that the vast majority of players simply never bother scrolling down. Enter the harder-to-ignore in-game offer, which a new white paper from social game advertiser OfferPal shows is an incredibly efficient way of creating more revenue opportunities from players.

How effective, exactly? Offerpal says developers that use it saw three times as much offer-based advertising revenue. According to the white paper, most of that increased revenue comes from users that had never participated in an advertising offer before (they made up 93% of those who participate in the in-game promotions). The in-game offers are relatively sticky as well, with 10% of these new promotion users coming back to complete another promotion within a week.

Of course, OfferPal has a vested interest in putting a good face on in-game offers, since they provide those very offers to game developers as their core business. Still, we have no specific reason to doubt their reporting. If in-game offers are really this good at drawing more money out of social game players, you can expect to see them in a LOT more games relatively soon.
