FarmVille Earth Day celebration: How green will FarmVille go?

Posted: 14 Apr 2010 11:00 PM PDT

farmville earth day 2010At Games.com - The Blog! we like to predict the future of Facebook gaming, and this time -- upcoming holiday Earth Day appeared in our crystal balls.

That's right -- now that green is the new black -- we're betting that FarmVille will be all over the greenest holiday of the year. Earth Day. Earth Day has been celebrated annually since 1970 and will have its 40th anniversary on April 22. And what better place than FarmVille to promote environmental, nature-friendly related items.

We predict that -- in the next week or so -- FarmVille will roll out something along these lines -- Solar Panels, hybrid tractors, compost containers and more in honor of our planet.

What items do you think FarmVille will roll out in honor of Earth Day?

FishVille Easter Basket expires today (April 15)

Posted: 14 Apr 2010 10:00 PM PDT

Hey FishVille fans, Thursday April 15th is not just Tax Day -- It's also the day that the Easter Baskets will be removed from FishVille. That means there's precious little time to collect any additional eggs and redeem any eggs that you have received for the limited edition rewards.

The Easter basket in FishVille has been around for quite some time, so everyone but the procrastinators out there should already have collected and traded in their eggs. If you have eggs in your gift box or Easter basket, Zynga says that they will be replaced with something "magically delicious." A new fish food perhaps?

Many people are eager for the Easter holiday to end in FishVille to reduce the amount of Facebook wall spam for eggs. Others really have enjoyed this holiday and the nifty rewards for collecting eggs. All good (or bad) things must come to an end, so hurry up and log in to FishVille and take care of any last-minute Easter transactions.

Did you wait until the last minute to collect eggs? If you received compensation for your leftover eggs, what did you get?

Killer FarmVille Pic of the Day: Like lambs led to slaughter

Killer farmville pic of the day: Like lambs led to slaughter

We've dubbed today's Killer FarmVile Pic 'Like Lambs led to slaughter," or maybe it's be more appropriate to call this -- like lambs avoiding the slaughter. Either way, this not-so-pastoral FarmVille scene shows a flock of sheep cringing at the axe in the corner, and sent us into fits of laughter. Kudos to FarmVille fan Millefleur for his/her wicked sense of humor.

Have an amazing FarmVille pic/video that tops this one? Send it libe@games.com, and we'll post it here.

Nintendo DS game Beat City translated into Facebook app

Posted: 14 Apr 2010 10:00 AM PDT

Nintendo DS game Beat City on Facebook

While the video game world can't decide what to make of Facebook -- must less gaming on Facebook -- we have to give game makers THQ a nod for trying to use the social networking service to promote upcoming game, Beat City.

This music game for the Nintendo DS is somewhat reminiscent of Rhythm Heaven, where players have to partake in some quirky activity in time to the music to earn points. The Beat City Facebook app offers just a taste of what this game will be like -- with a quick tutorial and a single level of the game.

This Facebook app/demo offers a peek at what's in store for Beat City -- right down to what it will be like to play the game on a DS using a stylus -- but this game commits a few social gaming faux pas. The demo version of the game is way too exacting and outside of the fact that this lives on Facebook, there's no real social components outside of asking friends to sign up and -- the main draw for this app -- a weekly chance to win a DSi XL handheld gaming system.

It's interesting to see companies like EA and THQ attempt to use gaming apps to market console games to the Facebook population, even if the concepts haven't been fully formed. This also makes us all the more intrigued to see how big console gaming franchises like Madden and Civilization will translate when they arrive on Facebook later this year.

Check out Beat City on Facebook >

Do you think the Beat City app on Facebook is all that? Sound off in the comments below.

FarmVille puppy: First look at the Border Collie pup all growed up

Posted: 14 Apr 2010 09:00 AM PDT

farmville border collies all growed up
Want to know what your little Border Collie puppy in FarmVille looks like when it's all growed up? A new FarmVille loading screen gives us a peek at what these little guys look like as they transform from pup to full-grown canine. Have to admit, it's hard not to have a soft spot for baby animals, but the adult version is rather adorable as well -- how can we resist those little white paws?

As an added bonus, there have been hints that full-grown dogs will also serve a purpose on the farm -- other than hanging around and looking cute. Border Collies are "great at commanding other animals," English sheep dogs "are great at herding sheep," the Golden Retrievers are "good at fetching." Seven days and counting until we get our first real look at grown up dogs' role on the farm.

Which FarmVille puppies do you have on your farm?

Treasure Isle, Hotel City continue explosive growth

Posted: 14 Apr 2010 08:45 AM PDT

We already knew Zynga's latest game, Treasure Isle, was an instant hit, gaining over seven million initial users in just ten days. Now we're finding that the game is retaining those users rather well, with over 4.3 million players currently playing the game every day. That's an amazing 2.7 million new daily users (a 165% jump) from just seven days ago, according to the data-crunchers over at Inside Social Games.

But "The Isle" isn't the only new game attracting a lot of new daily players. Playfish's Hotel City is already playing host to over 2.6 million daily players, a week-over-week increase of 55%. Any other week, that kind of growth would be cause for raucous celebration. With Treasure Isle around, though, it's just enough to get a No. 2 spot.

Also making a notable jump in this week's average user metrics: Family Feud, which posted a very healthy 71% growth in daily users for the week. While the game still has less than half a million total daily users, that number could explode very quickly if that kind of growth rate continues into the future.

New FarmVille rap pays homage to virtual farming

Posted: 14 Apr 2010 08:00 AM PDT

Somehow, it's always surprising to learn just how much people love FarmVille. Like, really love it. This week, we witness one of the first recorded FarmVille tattoos in history and now -- courtesy of FarmVille Freak and SheriGrace -- a FarmVille rap, which is, frankly, pretty darn good. Throw in some beats and auto-tune, and we're pretty sure SheriGrace would have the the next big social gaming meme on her hands.

MY Farmville RAP

"Every night when it's time to chill, I get online to play Farmville!
Plant my seeds and send my gifts, and always glad to get the ARBORISTS!
Can someone send me one brick Please? I need to level up, so I love the XP's!

I got so much ready on my lands, so I get some help CLICK on FARMHANDS!
I found some fuel while plowing my crops, and a pocket watch this fun never STOPS!

I got all my ducks lined up in a row, my rice at 99 percent so I watch that stuff GROW.
Harvest all my fruits and all my potato's, need 3 more friends to co-op some tomatoes.

Please fertilize my crops and help me get that COOP, never thought XP's would come from POOP!
I am collecting eggs and claiming your PRIZES and taking those bonuses as my score RISES!

I have 55 neighbors and it's levels I seek, and I am proud to say I am a FARMVILLE FREAK!
Ya ya You love it!" (FarmVille Freak SheriGrace)

Of course, this isn't the first FarmVille rap that's hit the Web. Perhaps you remember this little gem from last year:

Rumor Control: Facebook NOT entering the Chinese games market

Posted: 14 Apr 2010 08:00 AM PDT

Here at Games.com -- The Blog! we hear a lot of crazy rumors that we don't report on -- rumors so crazy that if you heard them, you would say, "Wow, that's really crazy." One such rumor hit the interwebs yesterday, courtesy of a Marbridge Daily post alleging that Facebook was looking to storm the Chinese market -- not as a social network provider, but as a game developer. The rumor post cited "an industry source" who said Facebook was recruiting a manager for a (rumored) Beijing office that would produce "high quality social games for the Western market."

While it seems likely that Facebook would be interested in taking a more active role in game development (and the virtual currency sales it generates), a few things just didn't make sense about this rumor. For one, why would Facebook open an office in China, where the service is currently blocked. For another, why would they try to create games for the Western market from a Chinese office? Wouldn't an American office be better positioned to create games for an American audience?

Well, it turns out our skepticism was right. A follow-up post on Marbridge Daily today explains that the rumor "may have been spawned from misinterpretation by Chinese media of a recent job posting from an unrelated social game developer." Apparently, U.S.-based Watercooler Games was looking for a manager for a new Beijing office devoted to "development of social games for Facebook." That means Facebook the platform, obviously, but someone must have thought it meant Facebook the company.

And that, dear friends, it how rumors get started.

FarmVille Crop Mastery retuned in April 13th update

Posted: 14 Apr 2010 02:06 AM PDT

Along with Tuesday nights Updates to FarmVille on 04.13.10, there was also a "retuning" of Crop Mastery!

Crop Mastery requirements have changed for some crops. Please note, if you have already mastered a specific crop whose mastery has changed, your rewards will NOT be taken away. You can keep your Crop Mastery and Crop Mastery Sign.

Please read all the details below directly from FarmVille Community Manager, Lexilicious.

"Hey Farmers!

As FarmVille is currently still in Beta, we will occasionally be making adjustments and changes to existing features as the game grows. With tonight's update, we are retuning the Mastery requirements of certain crops. Before we list the new values, there are a few points we want to make clear first:

* If you have already attained a Mastery Level for a crop, you will remain at that level, even if the requirements for that Level have increased past the number of crops you've currently harvested. You will not have any Mastery signs, achievements or associated rewards taken away.(Ex. If you have attained Level 2 Mastery of Eggplants, and have only harvested 500 crops, you will keep your Level 2 Mastery, regardless of the Mastery Retune.)

* In this case, you'll be at a deficit for the next Mastery level after the one you've already achieved. (Ex. With 500 Eggplants harvested, you are at Mastery Level 2 prior to the Mastery retuning. However, with the retuning, Eggplant's new Level 2 Mastery value is 600. In order to begin achieving Mastery points towards Level 3, you'll need to harvest 100 more crops.) In game, your deficit will be added to the total number of crops needed for your current level. For every crop harvested, this number will decrease until it is at the proper number. (Ex. With a deficit of 100 Eggplants, you'll see the number of crops you've harvested out of 700. For each crop you harvest, it will count down 699, 698, 697...all the way to 600, at which point crops will count toward Mastery Level 3)

* Some players will see that they've grown more than enough for a certain Mastery level, but their displayed stars are incorrect. Simply harvesting one more plot of that crop will earn you the star.

The following crops have had their Mastery levels retuned or adjusted.

* Eggplant : Lvl 1 - 200, Lvl 2 - 600, Lvl 3 - 1200
* Wheat: Lvl 1 - 150, Lvl 2 - 450, Lvl 3 - 900
* Soybean : Lvl 1- 300, Lvl 2 - 900, Lvl 3 - 1800
* Squash : Lvl 2 - 600, Lvl 3 - 1200
* Pumpkin: Lvl 3 - 3000
* Artichokes: Lvl 1 - 125, Lvl 2 - 375, Lvl 3 - 750
* Raspberries: Lvl 1 - 1500, Lvl 2 - 4500, Lvl - 9000
* Daffodills : Lvl 1 - 200, Lvl 2 - 600, Lvl 3 - 1200
* Cotton : Lvl 1 - 150, Lvl 3 - 900
* Aloe Vera: Lvl 1 - 800, Lvl 2 - 2400, Lvl 3 - 4800

* Potato : Lvl 1 - 150, Lvl 2 - 450, Lvl 3 - 900
* Carrots : Lvl 1 - 500, Lvl 2 - 1500, Lvl 3 - 3000
* Coffee : Lvl 1 - 350, Lvl 2 - 1050, Lvl 3 - 2100
* Corn : Lvl 1 - 200, Lvl 2 - 600, Lvl 3 - 1200
* Green Tea : Lvl 1 - 750, Lvl 2 -2250, Lvl 3 - 4500
