PetVille introduces Cafe World collectibles: 10 items in 20 days

Posted: 12 Apr 2010 09:00 PM PDT

Following on the heels of PetVille's FarmVille collectibles, the game has rolled out a new series of collectibles for another Zynga game -- Cafe World. Ten limited edition cafe-themed items will be released over the next 20 days, and will be available as a free gift for 48 hours only. From the looks in the picture above, the collection will include a chef, a mini-stove, a mini-table, mini-chair and a mini-sign as well.

petville cafe world collectibles - cafe world chef amelia

The first item on the list is the pink pony-tail wearing Cafe World mascot -- Chef Amelia, and she'll be available for two days only. Of course, the only way to add her to your collection is to receive her as a free gift. We recommend sending them to all your friends as a *wink* and *nudge* for them them to send one back

What will be better: the PetVille FarmVille collectibles or the PetVille Cafe World collectibles?

Can you dig it? Treasure Isle blows past 7 million players in 10 days

Posted: 12 Apr 2010 12:00 PM PDT

Treasure Isle 7 million served in 10 daysTreasure Isle seems to have struck gold for Zynga, with over 7 million players digging in to the treasure hunting game in just over a week.

To play Treasure Isle, create an avatar and then start digging for gold and other items on a series of islands until your daily allotment of energy runs out. Your tiny treasure seeker also has a customizable island of his/her own, complete with FarmVille style crop-planting and harvesting, and there is the requisite social elements, e.g. sending gifts and visiting friends' islands.

Whether people just love looking for buried treasure or the fact that this game is advertised across the biggest games on Facebook -- these numbers insidcate that Zynga may have yet another big hit on its hands.

Treasure Isle blew past Playdom's Social City, which seems to have hit a (still impressive) plateau at 13M players and Playfish's Hotel City, which has gained 4 million players since its launch on March 17. In the meantime, Zynga's Poker Blitz, aka 'poker for the masses' has seen molasses-like growth, with 1.2 million players after four weeks. Guess serious poker fans aren't digging it and non-poker players are apathetic.

In the meantime, you'll be able to find us yielding our shovels in an attempt to unearth some rare Puka shell jewelry.

EA's 'Human Tetris Project' is all up in your face

Posted: 12 Apr 2010 11:00 AM PDT

If you're anything like us, it's been your lifelong dream to be an astronaut. If you're nothing like us, your lifelong dream may be to see your face on a tiny Tetris block. If you're in that second group, have we got some good news for you!

Late last Friday, Electronic Arts unveiled The Human Tetris Project as part of the classic game's 25th anniversary celebration. As the name implies, the "project" lets you turn any of your Facebook profile pictures into a single Tetris block, to be grouped with three random strangers into a full-fledged Tetrimino. You can personalize your block with a short message and then share the news with your friends as you wait for the team at EA to approve your submission.

And then you get to play a wacky new version of Tetris with your and your friends making up the pieces, right? Well, no... actually you just get to watch a computer-controlled version of Tetris with blocks containing some of the random strangers that have similarly signed up for the project (nearly 2,400 as of this writing). Some would argue that this totally misses the point of everything that makes social gaming special and interesting, but... well, those people would be right, actually, and should probably apply for a job at Electronic Arts as soon as possible.

"ClickThirty" proves that inanity can succeed on Facebook

Posted: 12 Apr 2010 10:00 AM PDT

Here at Games.com -- The Blog!, we're willing to accept that Facebook games tend not to be the most complex things in the world. Frankly we think that's part of their appeal -- you don't need a PhD in gaming to figure out how to plant crops in Farmville or match gems in Bejeweled Blitz. That said, we're beginning to fear that the trend towards simplicity in Facebook gaming is beginning to reach a ridiculous zenith.

Exhibit A in our argument: A new Facebook game simply called "how fast can u click in 30 seconds?!?!" Like the title promises, the game asks you to click a button as many times as you can in 30 seconds, changing the window's background color every time you do. Once thirty seconds are up, you can share your score with your Facebook wall, enticing your friends to beat it. That's it. That's the whole game.

The mere existence of this game isn't that surprising. What is surprising is the game's relatively healthy growth. As the Facebook Indie Games blog pointed out, the game has grown to an impressive 250,000 monthly active users in just a week. Considering it took a major developer like Digital Chocolate nearly three months to reach a million users, that initial rate of growth is pretty impressive. ClickThirty's 44 reviews give it a 4.3/5 average and it has somehow managed to attract 11,000 fans, over twice as many as the long-suffering Sega Dreamcast fanpage.

Of course, it's only been a week, and those 250,000 users could end up being the ceiling for the game, rather than the floor. That said, we're not sure we like what the early success of this game says about Facebook gamers -- namely, that they're just looking for the simplest possible way to waste time and show up their friends with some sort of quantifiable number (*cough* their Mafia Wars level *cough*). At this rate, pretty soon, we'll be seeing "hit the space bar as many times as u can" and "scream as loud as you can into your microphone" as top-growing Facebook apps. And that will be the beginning of the end, my friends. The beginning of the end.

Happy Pets: NEW! Guinea Pigs

Posted: 12 Apr 2010 09:45 AM PDT

Guinea Pigs in Happy Pets
Guinea Pigs, the cutest bundles of fuzzy love you've ever seen, have made their way into Happy Pets today. Unfortunately, each one is 54 Facebook Credits, which means you'll need to spend real cash (or $5.40 USD) to own one. And, like most pets, your ability to buy them depends on the level you've reached.

The Pink Guinea Pig, shown in the in-game window prompt above, is open to all levels. The other colors -- Heather, S'more (an awesome name for a pet color), Brick Red, and Charcoal are purchasable starting at Level 31. They each take two days to mature and share a feeding time of six hours, but they sell for different prices.

Cafe World Wedding Cake glitch: Zynga says 'sorry' with free Cafe Cash

Posted: 12 Apr 2010 09:30 AM PDT

cafe world wedding favorA few weeks ago, every Cafe World player encountered a teary-eyed bride who needed help baking a wedding cake. Then, after we bugged friends to send us the require ingredients for this mega cake, nothing happened. The cake just sat around, and the bride never picked it up. Or, we'd add ingredients to the wedding cake and come back the next day to find that they had mysteriously disappeared again.

Well, looks the complaints were heard, and Zynga's offering a consolation prize for PO'd bakers -- free Cafe Cash. When you login to Cafe World over the next 10 days, click the envelope at the top of the screen to earn 1 Cafe Cash at a time.

We're not sure if a little Cafe Cash will quell the angry masses, but it's at least a move in the right direction.

Quote of the Moment: "It's already been done"

Posted: 12 Apr 2010 09:30 AM PDT

"I wish I could say I paid more attention to [recent game sales trends] . . . I worry more about the macro trends - what kinds of games people are playing and what they want to play. I'm not a guy who ever says, 'Oh my God, social games are hot right now. We have to go make a social game,' or 'Kids games are hot,' or 'The [Nintendo] Wii is hot; we have to go make Wii games.' I tend to look at what's the underlying notions of those. Like, why are social games popular and how does that apply to what we do? . . . If you just try to do exactly what somebody else has done, it's too late. It's already been done."

-Irrational Games General Manager Ken Levine explains why his company isn't eager to jump on the social gaming bandwagon

Rockstar promotes Red Dead Redemption with Facebook 'Gunslingers' game

Posted: 12 Apr 2010 09:00 AM PDT

Mega-developer Rockstar is best known for sprawling, 3D console epics like the Grand Theft Auto series. But the company isn't immune from the Facebook gaming trend, pulling back the curtain today on Red Dead Redemption: Gunslingers.

The game lets you choose between three classes -- powerful Outlaws, accurate Sharpshooter and quick "Fast Hands" -- for your character, which you can customize with a unique name and baskstory. From there, it's all about challenging friends or strangers to duels, which play out as relatively graphic canned gunfight animations featuring the 3D characters from Rockstar's upcoming PS3 and Xbox 360 game, Red Dead Redemption.

Winning gains you more experience, which goes towards higher levels and improved statistics in attacking, dodging, health and stamina. The more duels you fight (and the more new friends you attract into the game), the higher you move up a global leaderboard, and the more meaningless achievements you earn.

Overall, the game's Mafia-Wars-minus-the-missions gameplay seems unlikely to set the social gaming space on fire. Still, it's interesting to see a major developer using a Facebook game as a tool to promote an upcoming major console release. It remains to be seen how successful the promotion will be, or whether it will inspire other publishers to follow suit, but we're going to go ahead and lean towards "no" on both counts.

Cafe World: NEW! Daily Cooking Bonus

Posted: 12 Apr 2010 08:45 AM PDT

Cafe World Daily Cooking Bonus
Now when you log into Cafe World, you can expect a free bonus each day!

This new feature is very similar to Restaurant City's Free Daily Ingredient(s), which awards players with one free ingredient for checking in the first day, and then up to 3 ingredients per day, once they've logged in at least 3 days in a row.

The difference, however, is that Cafe World lets you know what you'll be earning for each day of logging into the game. Day 1, which is today, earned me 705 Coins. Tomorrow, another batch of free coins is expected. Days 3 and 4 are Mystery Dishes. Days 5 and 6 are Spice Rack parts. And Day 7 seems guaranteed to net me 3 Cafe Cash!

And here's the best part -- after you click on "Claim Bonus", you'll get the chance to post the good news onto your Facebook Wall to share your bonus with your friends!

Popcap planning new 'Blitz' game, more adaptations for Facebook

Posted: 12 Apr 2010 08:15 AM PDT

Hot off the recent release of a downloadable desktop version of their Facebook hit Bejeweled Blitz, Popcap is showing signs they're far from abandoning traditional Facebook gaming. "We're definitely doing another 'Blitz' game, but we're also doing some pretty experimental games," Popcap CEO and co-founder John Vechey told MTV Multiplayer recently.

According to the report, the Blitz game will not be a sequel to Bejeweled Blitz, but an adaptation of one of their existing franchises. In addition to the new Blitz game (which Vechey said would be coming "sooner rather than later"), Popcap reportedly has plans to adapt one or two more of their franchises for Facebook before the end of the year.

While Popcap mega-franchises like Plants vs. Zombies, Peggle and Bookworm seem most likely to get the Facebook treatment, part of us hopes Popcap will consider dipping a bit deeper into their catalog to revive the Feeding Frenzy or Chuzzle franchises for Facebook. OK, not really (those games aren't nearly as good), but, hye, it could happen.

Cafe World: Wall Postable "Mystery Gift Box"

Posted: 12 Apr 2010 04:35 AM PDT

Zynga played a little bit with how the Daily Bonus is being handled and made it even cooler than the new special rewards of Restaurant City. One of the biggest additions is the Mystery Gift Box, one you can earn from your friends' activity, and one that holds amazing prizes inside. Read on to find out everything about the Mystery Gift Box in Cafe World!
Cafe World Mystery Gift Box
What is this Mystery Gift Box, after all?

It is a prize awarded to Cafe World players who click on the wall feed of their friends who logged in to Cafe World and cooked for more than three days in a row. It can be also received as a gift from friends who decide to share a Mystery Gift after getting one themselves (similar to the Lottery tickets).

What can you find inside the Mystery Gift Box in Cafe World?

You can find tons of stuff, like anything between 1-4 Cafe Cash, various amounts of coins, Cafe Points and even free dishes, or a Red Smooch Chair, Baseball Chair and Happy Tiger Bench. Overall - a really cool new addition to the game, don't you think?
