Breaking News - Treasure Isle from Zynga Launched

Posted: 01 Apr 2010 01:55 PM PDT

Zynga has released it's latest game, Treasure Isle. With Treasure Isle, Zynga is employing it's tried and true method of surveying the market of games, being deliberate and picking a game genre it thinks it can make a successful entry into. This methodology follows FarmVille, PetVille and Mafia Wars (emulating Farm Town, Pet Society and Mobsters respectively) With Treasure Isle, Zynga is entering the space filled be Treasure Madness and Tiki Resort.

Treasure Isle is in it's early going so we'll see if Zynga can replicate it's mega successes like FarmVille and Cafe World.

Instead of describing the whole thing, checking out the opening scenes in the video below:

Hotel City: Earn Free Playfish Cash by Leveling Up

Posted: 01 Apr 2010 11:30 AM PDT

Earn Free Playfish Cash by playing Hotel CityPlayfish Cash is a special virtual currency in Playfish games, such Pet Society and Restaurant City, that lets players purchase exclusive items and benefits, but requires real money to get.

Now, Hotel City, the newest of Playfish's Facebook games, has announced an offer where simply leveling up can give you free PF Cash.

Right now, getting to Level 10 will earn you 4 PF Cash, and getting to Level 25 by April 12th will earn you another 4 PF Cash, for a total of 8 PF Cash -- that's about $1.60 in US Dollars.

While this isn't much, it's nice to finally have a way to earn premium currency for premium items when many other games already have this option.

Keep in mind though, the PF Cash won't be credited to you until April 16th. There's also no guarantee yet, that you'll be able to use the PF Cash to buy stuff in games other than Hotel City, though given that PF Cash is the same in all the Playfish games, it's a pretty safe bet to expect that you can.

Farmville April Fools News Wrap

Posted: 01 Apr 2010 11:00 AM PDT

Zynga isn't the only one changing up Farmville for the purposes of April fooling. Here's a round-up of some of the better jokes various news sites have made up for the ubiquitous farming simulator today.

If Online April Fools Pranks Had Balls - The latest Cracked.com Photoshop contest includes a bunch of great potential jokes, but the reason it's being linked here is the winning joke image, which appear at the top of this post. Can you imagine logging on to your farm only to see such carnage? The horror... the horror...

RNC using Farmville to reach out to young voters - I included this joke not because it's especially funny, but because it would actually be a good idea. If Microsoft can use Farmville to gain 400,000 fans for Bing in a single day, why can't a political party do the same thing?

Digital plague sweeps Farmville - This Stuff.tv joke makes it onto the list for the description of the fake locust plague as "the worst thing to happen to online farming since Mafia Wars." ZING!

Farmville pies its Farmville farmers on April Fools Day - I haven't been able to confirm that this one is an actual joke, since it's only suppoded to affect certain Farmville players. Either way, it seems like a great way to get virtual farmers to take themselves and their digital crops a less seriously, at least for a day.

Popcap's April Fools Joke: Celebrity Bejeweled

Posted: 01 Apr 2010 10:30 AM PDT

Everyone loves Bejeweled Blitz. Everyone loves celebrities. So why not put together those two things and make something that everyone will SUPER love? That seem to be the thinking behind Popcap's April 1 announcement of Celebrity Bejeweled, a game that promises to "replace the traditional gem pieces with holographic likenesses of gem-named superstars from popular film, television, music and sports."

Those gem-themed celebrities range from the well-known (Neil Diamond) to the marginally known (Joss Stone) to the little known (Ruby Wax, Pearl Lowe). The celebrity-matching madness comes at a price, though -- thanks to expensive live DNA sampling and a real cubic zirconia box, the game caries a suggested retail price of £2,000...

OK, as the headline should have made clear, this is just a little joke on Popcap's part. Still, we don't doubt that such a game would sell one hojillion copies if it were real. Would you buy it?

Mafia Wars: Level Up in Zynga Poker, Earn the Pocket Rockets

Posted: 01 Apr 2010 10:00 AM PDT

Pocket Rockets for Mafia Wars from Zynga Poker
Offered by Zynga Poker for use in Mafia Wars, the "Pocket Rockets" has an offense stat of 53, and defense of 23. You can get it by leveling up 3 times in Zynga Poker.

The previous Zynga cross-promotional item offered between the two games was the "Ace in the Sleeve", which has the exact same stats as the "Pocket Rockets" and required reaching Level 6.

If you haven't gotten either item, the "Pocket Rockets" is certainly more worth your time, since you only require 3 level ups instead of 6. If you've already got "Ace in the Sleeve", and you're not a collections addict, there's no point in trying for this one; because in terms of game functionality, they're identical.

Wild Ones tricks players with April Fools' Map

Posted: 01 Apr 2010 09:39 AM PDT

wild ones april fools map
Wild Ones has totally confused its players with a hilarious April Fools' prank. Most games like FarmVille, announced their trick clearly with special items or updates. The pet fighting game took a different approach and released a new map without alerting anyone.

But how could the release of a new level be confusing? The map is called Foolish Errors and at first glance looks exactly like an error screen or as if the map had failed to load! Pets can stand on, grapple, destroy, and unleash the usual Wild Ones havoc on the words and lines of the error screen.

Check out the ingenious April Fools' map after the break.Wild Ones april fools map
Foolish Errors had me totally baffled at first. I had just informed my competitors of the situation, "Guys, I wish you could see my screen, the map hasn't loaded!" when I realized I had been completely fooled. Upon closer inspection, the map has small details that give away its nature. For example, along the bottom it asks: Why am I seeing this page? What's an April Fools'?

And to think I was on the verge of leaving the game!

Other competitors seem to be just as perplexed as at least one person quit every game I played. Join in on the hilarity by heading over to Wild Ones now!

Mafia Wars: Chop Shop is Now the Unicorn Castle

Posted: 01 Apr 2010 09:00 AM PDT

Mafia Wars Unicorn Shop LogoBecause we all know that the first things you think of when playing Mafia Wars are pretty fairytale unicorns, Zynga has decided to overhaul the Chop Shop, turning it from a car lot into a factory for creating (mostly) adorable little unicorns! Everyone say "Aww."

The Unicorn Castle has immediately replaced the Chop Shop in its location on the New York properties bar. It comes in the form of a shiny lavender castle, and it requires Magic Potions to create unicorns, like the armored Warcorn, the chilly Icecorn, the colorful Rainbowcorn and so on - one unicorn is available for each of the Unicorn Castle's 10 available levels.

At later levels, you'll need more than just Magic Potions to create unicorns, which is where additional items like the Rainbow and the Fairy Wing come into play. Aside from the aesthetic and item changes, the Unicorn Castle functions in the same way as the old Chop Shop, and you can upgrade it by collecting multiple units of five different ingredients: Starstones, Drawbridges, Dream Corners, Pretty Towers, and Magic Walls.

If you'd rather not post a general message on your news feed asking for ingredients, you can still send individual pieces to your friends in the hopes that they will return the favor, via the game's free gifts page.

Head over to the game's page to begin building your own magical unicorns of hope and wonder!

(Full disclosure: Yes, this is an April Fool's Joke. No, the Unicorn Castle is not a permanent addition to the game, and we're sure our Chop Shops will be returning soon. In the meantime though, you really can create unicorns, so why not give it a shot?)

Happy Pets: Easter Bunny, Bunny Ears, and Bunny Orphans, oh my!

Posted: 01 Apr 2010 08:00 AM PDT

Easter Bunny and Bunny Ears in Happy Pets
Three new Spring and Easter-themed bunnies hopped into Happy Pets today -- the first is "Easter Bunny", which will be joining the "Chocolate Bunny" as part of the Easter Limited Edition Pets at the in-game store. An additional Limited Edition item is the "Bunny Ears", which can be worn on any pet. You just have to click on your pet, and then click on the "Dress Up" option to buy it.
Happy Pets Orphaned Bunnies
The other two bunnies, "Baby Blue" and "Lavender" are now available through Facebook wall posts. Just like the "White Bunny", you'll randomly get a prompt in the game to put an orphaned bunny up for adoption, then your friends can click your wall post to adopt it for themselves. "White Bunny" is listed as a Common, the "Baby Blue" is an Uncommon, and the "Lavender" is a Rare, which means it'll be the hardest to run into.

Cafe World hops from Candyland to Easter

Posted: 01 Apr 2010 06:15 AM PDT

Cafe World Easter
Easter seems to be the perfect holiday for Cafe World to hop into, after last week's Candyland theme. Cause once again, you've got cutesy little critters in soft pastels colors with particular food obsessions, engaging in non-standard activities, such as egg-painting and riding a Ferris Wheel.

That the two sets might as well be one, probably explains why this item release is so small. There's only 20 pieces of indoor decor, but this is balanced out by 9, thoughtfully animated figures. It's almost like they're taking their cue from Country Story, who goes for tiny, high-quality, themed releases.
Cafe World Easter Items
And while there's no Easter-themed recipes, we do have two new giftables, the Easter Basket and the Chocolate Bunny. But the gamemakers also tossed in a Matzo Ball Soup, primarily in acknowledgment of Passover, a major Jewish holiday that's been going on all week.

SPP Ranch: Collect Easter Eggs for special prizes

Posted: 01 Apr 2010 06:07 AM PDT

SPP Ranch has received another wave of Easter fun. It was one of the first games to roll out their Easter goodies, so we had a hunch that SPP Ranch wasn't done yet. Now, players can embark on an Easter egg hunt, collect eggs, and ultimately trade them in for prizes.

SPP Ranch's Easter egg hunt is similar to the Easter game FarmVille released last week. There are two ways to collect eggs: requesting eggs from your friends and receiving them as free gifts. So unless you have generous friends that play SPP Ranch, it's going to be difficult to build up your collection for those special rewards.
SPP Ranch Easter Egg Hunt Details Two ways to collect eggsSPP Ranch giftable eggs
While the prize list is still a mystery, we do know the amount of eggs required for each of the five rewards.
Players can get a special prize after collecting 5 eggs, 10 eggs, 25 eggs, 50 eggs, and 100 eggs.
SPP Ranch Easter Egg Hunt Prizes
Hopefully your SPP Ranch friends list is sizable enough to shoot for that 100 egg prize. Don't wait too long though, the hunt won't last forever. Head over to SPP Ranch to start sending and receiving eggs for your collection.

Restaurant City: Hop over for the full Easter items release

Posted: 01 Apr 2010 06:00 AM PDT

Restaurant City Easter theme
As we told you earlier this week, Restaurant City's newest item theme is Easter, and with the full item release today, we see a nice assortment of items that will be perfect for decorating not only for Easter, but for the entire Spring season itself.

In terms of coin only items, you can pick up a nice wooden Spring Chair, and a small Spring Table, along with wooden Spring Divider pieces (for use in creating a bathroom area, or a walkway through your restaurant, as examples), both potted and outdoor plants (including a lovely vase filled with plants and Easter eggs), two different types of Spring Grass flooring, Chicken decorations, and even a Spring Toilet.

These items range in price from 30 coins for a single square of Spring Grass flooring to 2600 coins for a Mother Hen decorative item.

Restaurant City Easter Spring Decor
As for Playfish Cash, or otherwise unique items, we're left with a small selection of premium items, like a longer, family-style Spring Table, a Chicken Coop, and Spring Wallpaper (those are tulips running horizontally along the bottom).

You can pick up some functional items like a Spring Goddess Statue that leaves flowers where your patrons walk, a Pet Chick or Bunny that flap and hop around your restaurant, a Spring Drink Dispenser that serves drinks 10% faster, and finally, a Spring Stove that cooks food 15% faster.

One final decorative item is an email-only item that comes in the form of a large decorative chocolate egg. It can be purchased for 4000 coins, but you have to be a member of the Restaurant City email distribution list for it to unlock as available for you to purchase.
Restaurant City Premium Easter Items
But the theme doesn't stop there - no sir. On the game's free gifts menu, you can send one of the game's 11 decorative eggs to friends. In the screen below, you can see that I am able to send a Pink Egg, but I have seen other eggs come and go from the page throughout the day, so this appears to be either random, or at least timed to change periodically.
Restaurant City Decorative Egg Item
This theme may not be as large as other Restaurant City themes released in the past, but that doesn't make the items therein any less adorable. To decorate your restaurant with some of these items in celebration of the upcoming Easter holiday, head over to the game's page on Facebook.

FarmVille: New Wandering Stallion Icon Added to Stables

Posted: 01 Apr 2010 06:00 AM PDT

FarmVille Horse Stable - No Wandering Stallion
In an update earlier this month Zynga added the ability to produce foals from stables on FarmVille. Along with this update came the opportunity to adopt a Wandering Stallion from a neighbor. The Wandering Stallion was a new type of animal that is not permanent and cannot be placed on the farm; it stays for one day or harvesting of the Horse Stable.

Many farmers were confused because after giving a Wandering Stallion shelter there was no way of seeing it in their Horse Stable. In one of the updates yesterday, March 31st, this issue was resolved. Now when you "Look Inside" your Horse Stable there is an icon in the upper left hand corner that shows you whether or not you are currently sheltering a Stallion.
FarmVille Horse Stable with Wandering Stallion icon
The Wandering Stallion is an adoptable animal that you can find on your farm and share with your neighbors via Facebook newsfeed, giving them the opportunity to adopt. Although, if you find one on your farm, you may not keep it for yourself. Wandering Stallions and other Stallions can be found in your Horse Stable and possibly yield a Foal. Note, only one Stallion can be in your Horse Stable at any given time.

What type of foal are you most excited to produce?

FarmVille: Zynga turning the real North Carolina FarmVille into a game?

Posted: 01 Apr 2010 05:30 AM PDT

FarmVille LogoOur friends over at the Unigamesity just posted an article that's claiming that Zynga Plans to Buy Real Farmville Town, Turn It into Virtual Reality Game. That sounds really interesting, but also a lot like a April 1st prank, don't you think?

According to the website, though, Zynga is planning to purchase the real life FarmVille town (situated in North Carolina) and turn it into a "real game" of FarmVille:

"Half of the town's surface will be turned into a real life virtual farming game with around 36 huge farms waiting for rich wanna be farmers to come and take care of them: the real life version of the FarmVille game will last one month and the session will cost just $250,000 (internet access not included). Farmers will be allowed to do whatever they wish to on their farm, plant whatever crops and grow any animals already available in the game. Even more, in order to make thereal life farming look like the virtual farming in FarmVille, Zynga will genetically modify watermelons to grow in 4 days, soybeans to be ready in one day and they're already instructing chickens to lay eggs of different colors.

The other half of FarmVille will be turned into a theme park, with zany rides like Mad Cow Train, Fertilize your Neighbor and Toss the Turtle promising to keep everybody entertained."

Yup, definitely sounds like an April Fools Day joke. But a nice one, don't you think?

FarmVille La Maison Gifting Supplies Return to Gifting Page & Giftable Yellow Greenery!

Posted: 01 Apr 2010 04:30 AM PDT

It looks like La Maison free Gifting Supplies have returned to the FarmVille Gifting Page. Due to an unintentional error made earlier this week, the free La Maison supplies expired prematurely. They will expire from the Market, tonight, March 31st at 9pm PT. We also do not know what this means for those farmers that purchased final La Maison supplies with farm cash after the early end. Hopefully, Zynga will address this issue in more detail.

UPDATE: From FarmVille's Lexilicious,

"Due to the technical issues over the past few days, the French Chateau LE items have been restored to the Market. They will expire on March 31st at 9:00 PM PST."

There is also a new giftable Yellow Greenery that debuted in the FarmVille Gifting page.

Remember, the only way to receive free giftables is as a gift from one of your FarmVille neighbors.
